How To Freshen Mattress

Often, when we do a big spring clean or a deep clean of our houses, we tend to focus on vacuuming, dusting and cleaning out the bathrooms. We often overlook our mattresses, and fail to realize that they need a spruce up every once in a while.

Keeping a mattress clean should definitely be on your radar, and is as important as keeping your bedding and pillows clean so that you can breathe, sleep and relax much better. But, how on earth do you clean a mattress? Let’s find out in our handy guide of how to freshen up a mattress!

How To Freshen Up A Mattress

Without freshening up your mattress, you could be left with dust mites, sweat stains and a build up of grime where you sleep, which no one wants! Therefore, you’ll want to clean, deodorize and freshen your mattress with these simple steps.

The first step is to strip your bedding off the bed and stick it in your washing machine! Then, take some baking soda and sieve it all over the mattress. Baking soda is the perfect cleaning product to keep in your home as it’s so versatile and can really banish tough stains or mold.

By pouring some baking soda over your mattress, you can really neutralize any foul smells and revitalize your mattress. If you use a sieve to apply the baking soda, you can spread it evenly and quickly all over the mattress.

The next step is to leave the baking soda to sink into the mattress and remove any scents. Try leaving the baking soda as long as you can for the best results, and keep the windows in the room open to air the mattress and allow it to breathe while the baking soda sits.

Then, you’ll want to vacuum your mattress to remove any leftover baking soda and ensure that it is all thoroughly removed from the bed. We do recommend using an upholstery attachment on your vacuum as this will cleanse all of the baking soda up with ease. You may have to vacuum around your room a little too in case any got onto the floor!

Once you’ve vacuumed it all up, your mattress should be smelling clean and clear, and completely fresh! All you have to do then is make your bed with some fresh sheets, and repeat the process every six months or so!

How To Remove Mattress Stains

To remove stubborn stains from your mattress, it’s best to attack them head on as soon as they happen. So, strip the bedding and get right at the mattress with some diluted washing up liquid.

Then, try dabbing lightly at the stain with a cloth to lift it out of the mattress. Try not to get the mattress too wet as they aren’t intended to be waterproof and simply work slowly and gently to scrub out the stain.

If it still is not budging, then try using an upholstery cleaner if suitable for your mattress, or opt for a mattress-specific stain remover here.

How Do You Deodorize A Mattress?

After freshening up your mattress, you should notice that there are no odors or strong smells, but if you need a way to deodorize it again, you can try a natural remedy. With a little bit of white vinegar that you probably already have in your cupboard, you can naturally neutralize any odors being emitted by your mattress.

All you have to do is mix white vinegar with water to make your own organic, simple, chemical free deodorizer. Simply mix equal parts of white vinegar: here and water in a small spray bottle, and apply the solution all over the mattress. Try not to use too much that the mattress is wet as you need to leave the solution air dry.

We recommend leaning your mattress against the wall so that you can spray one side, then move it over and spray the other. Once the solution is applied, try leaving it to dry for a few hours with the windows open to air it out.

How To Make Your Mattress Smell Fresh & Nice

When cleaning and freshening up your mattress, you may be looking for ways to make it smell much more inviting. Luckily, we have a great tip for you. When covering your mattress in baking soda, try adding in around 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil to make it smell fresh, alluring and amazing. With a few drops of lavender essential oil or eucalyptus essential oils, you can create a soothing, relaxing effect when you hop into bed!

Once you’ve cleaned your mattress, you should also make sure that you keep on top of cleaning your bedding by changing it every week. This will also make sure that there are no germs or nasty smells in the bed, but also no dust and allergens that could irritate your nose whilst you’re trying to sleep.

How Often Should You Clean A Mattress?

Mattresses are meant to last for decades or more, but that does not mean that you should just replace it once it gets dirty or used! You can keep on top of maintenance by cleaning your mattress once every six months or so. However, if there is a spillage or a stain on the mattress, then make sure that you clean it straight away.

That being said, you should have a mattress cover: here on your mattress to protect it from any spills or stains, so that you do not have to clean your mattress as much, and you can keep it as fresh as possible.

To conclude, it’s really important and easy to clean your mattress. With just a few home remedies, you can freshen up your mattress to keep it clean, hygienic and odor free for months at a time!

That way, you can ensure that your mattress lasts longer, and you can get a better night’s sleep.
