What Is A Bed Board

What Exactly Do We Mean By A Bed Board?

Bed boards are large and flat wooden surfaces that go underneath the bed’s mattress. They’re used to preventing a mattress from sagging to the point where a person’s posture and comfort is compromised.

Sometimes, bed boards can be metal, spring or wooden slats that allow for suspension. You can usually buy a sturdy bed board from any bed manufacturer or medical store. Failing that, you can make one.

Plywood is a good material to use if you choose to design and make your own. As long as the bed board is entirely flat, strong and does not have any pieces of wood that are sticking out – you’ll be in good stead.

Different Methods Of Support

To get a great night’s sleep, our bodies need the right support and this is why a bed board can help. We’ve decided to discuss some of the most popular methods for support when you’re trying to get some shut-eye. They are:

Plywood Bed Board

This is when a piece of plywood board is sandwiched between the mattress and you. It has to be cut to the specifications of the mattress, because if it is too short or too long – you will not get the same benefits.

To ensure the best results, try to purchase a plywood bed board directly from a bed manufacturer and provide your specifications, so they can assist you. If you’re cutting it yourself, you’ll need to ensure you’ve got the measurements just right.

Curved edges of mattresses can cause problems here, so if you have curved edges – you’d be wise to measure to the end of the mattress and make the cuts slightly after. Remember, you can always cut more off, but you can’t add more wood in!

The Lone Mattress

Many people find that a bed board on top of a bed frame can cause uneven movements and overall will make their sleep more difficult, but this is subjective to the person and the type of bed.

If this is the case for you though, you might find it helpful to remove the bottom frame of the bed and placing a correctly measured plywood in the area – at which point, you can place the mattress, covered with the correct bedding, on top.

It’s also possible, if all the measurements are exact – to drill or bolt in screws through the corners of the bed board which will go directly into the outside bed frame. This allows for sturdy support and also comfortable suspension.

The Hinged Board

Some bed boards can be designed with a hinge in the center which allows them to be easily transported and move in shape to suit your needs.

This is a similar design to hospital beds, and they work by acting as the go-between of the box spring and the mattress.

The Bunky Board

This is a type of bed board that is covered in foam and is primarily used to support bunk beds. You can find these in many bed stores and directly from the manufacturer.

My Bed Board Makes Noise – What Can I Do?

Depending on which type of bed board you have decided to use and what sort of bed frame you have, you might notice that when you move, irritating sounds can be emitted. These are either squeaks, clicks or “shaving” sounds.

The best way to prevent these sounds is to ensure that your bed board is tight to the overall design of your bed, and you’ve got the correct bedding. A mattress protector can stop the bed board from sliding out of place with the mattress.

It can also stop those annoying “shaving” sounds. Sometimes too, you can hear a thud and this normally suggests your bed board is hitting the floor, meaning the suspension is too much. Always ensure your bed board is sturdy, otherwise there is little use in having one.

Do I Need A Bed Board Though?

It’s up to you. Most people find that a bed board gives them a much better quality of sleep and allows them to sleep longer. When people wake up, they often don’t have aches or pains if they use a bed board.

Do I Need A Bed Board Though?

For people with particular medical conditions such as arthritis, it’s recommended that you use a bed board, so you do not exacerbate your symptoms.

How Should It Look?

After you’ve removed your mattress and placed your bed board, you should then check if it is fixed correctly and then cover it with a mattress protector, if you wish. Place the mattress down and put your bedding on – you’re done!

If you have trouble with these areas, consider asking a friend or social worker for assistance.

The Bottom Line

Bed boards can be very beneficial and are extremely simple to apply to your bed. If you do not yet have a bed board, you should consider trying one out and assessing the difference in your night’s sleep.
